The Biosafety Level 3 facilities at Thomas Jefferson University are designed to provide the necessary safety features to perform cell culture or animal experiments with indigenous, or exotic, agents that may cause serious or potentially lethal disease because of the exposure by inhalation.
The BSL3 labs are separated based on the work being performed. At Jefferson, there are dedicated cell culture labs in BLSB 722BA and JAH 575. There are also dedicated animal labs in JAH 352 suite as well as JAH 651 to be used as a backup. In addition to the rooms that house animals used for experiments, JAH 352 suite also contains a tissue processing room. JAH 352H is outfitted as a full cell culture lab with the idea of using the instruments and equipment for growing viruses specifically for animal experiments and processing samples from animal experiments. This processing can include running experiments on the infectious material and/or inactivating the virus in the infectious material so it may be removed for downstream processing in a BSL2 lab.
Laboratory personnel intending to work in any BSL3 lab need to have specific training in handling pathogenic and potentially lethal agents and are supervised by competent and experienced scientists until they are certified to work in the lab alone.
